Sending Care Packages

As you know, we are collecting items to send care packages to deployed members of our military. I just wanted to let you know why this is so important. It helps prevent PTSD by giving them something fun to do and lets them know that people care about them. Many of them are not able to get what they need where they are. I know that some of them are on bases with a PX, but the PX does not carry what they need or the items that they need run out quickly. In recent weeks I have been asked for sunscreen, insect repellent, chocolate (that does not melt), goodies, freeze pops, drink mixes, and other snacks. They either do not have a PX by them or these items are running out and they cannot get them. I do not send hygiene products and food together. It takes anywhere from one week to eight weeks to get there.

Many of them may miss meals because they are working and the only thing they have to eat is what is sent to them. These snacks and food items give them something to eat. I have been told by many of them that there is nothing there and they don’t have the basics. They could not pack everything that they need for an entire year to take with them. Many of them live in tents and have to limit their showers. Baby wipes are often a big request. Imagine taking a shower in a tent. I don’t think that I want to do that.

Also, it is now at least 110 degrees there and getting warmer. They need things to keep them cool and hydrated. Some of them enjoy water guns, water balloons, bubbles, and other fun games. I have been told that sometimes the fun stuff is more important than the useful stuff.

If you can donate anything it would be appreciated. Writing a funny letter or making a card (coloring is ok) without glitter is helpful. They get tired of reading my writing. Remember if you are donating items to check the expiration date and the items have to be able to fit in the box. Sending food with a lot of air takes up space and is expensive. Big bags of chips and pretzels are not a good idea. Individual packages of pretzels, crackers, peanuts, trail mix, drink pouches, hard candy, beef jerky (no pork or slim jims), and other things that will travel well are appreciated.

If you can help, please send a message on the contact page.
